Caring to Read

Caring to Read project

Bolton Literacy Trust has been working closely with the Looked After Children team to offer targeted support to many of the children they are working with. Children's specific interests and hobbies have been used as a basis to put together themed literacy packs to encourage children to read more.

Packs have included a range of resources, appropriate to children's needs - from fiction and non fiction books, writing materials, activity books, to comics, annuals and toys.

Bolton Literacy Trust is currently working in partnership with the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester to offer some of Bolton's young people a really important and exciting opportunity to improve their literacy skills. Two groups of pupils, including a number of Looked After Children, are currently travelling to Manchester on alternate Wednesdays after school to participate in some innovative, fun workshops delivered by the Bridgewater's Writer in Residence, Terry Caffrey. Both groups have had a tour of the very impressive Bridgewater Hall (it is actually built on springs!) and even managed to see the Halle Orchestra in rehearsal! Terry is very experienced in working with young people and, as well as improving literacy skills, everyone is having a really fantastic and memorable time!

If you are a foster carer and would like information or ideas on how you can support your child/children with their learning, please ring Sandra on 332760.
