Working in schools

BLT work in schools in a range of ways...

a. Bespoke 'family learning' courses for parents/carers at your schools. Examples include:

i) Share - based on making learning resources to be shared at home with the children)
ii) Healthy Families - similar to Share but more health, safety and well-being focussed
iii) Online Basics - using the web, keeping children safe online, using email etc.
iv) Working with Word - covering all aspects of Microsoft Word
v) Arts and Crafts - a range of activities according to group wishes
vi) Needlework - project-based work e.g. making an apron for your child
vii) Write with me - a creative writing course aimed at getting parents into writing
viii) ESOL - English classes for parents whose first language is not English
ix) Care to Read - engaging parents in reading activities and tackling mental well-being
x) We are happy to develop other courses in line with what parents want

b. Parenting courses

- based on a Triple P positive parenting model but bespoke according to the needs of the school

c. Sessions for parents with their school-age children. Examples include:

i) Cooking together - making and tasting dishes together
ii) Arts and crafts - making and creating together using a range of techniques

NB: The above sessions are usually between 8 and 10 weeks in duration, an hour and a half a week - times to suit schools e.g. in line with dropping off or picking up times. The cost is £1,000 per course per school. An option is that delivery is shortened to 5 weeks and a crèche is included for parents with younger children not yet at school.

d. Sessions for parents/carers with their pre-school children. Examples include:

i) Words and Pictures - each session is based on a letter of the alphabet and songs, stories, craft, a healthy snack and music are all involved
ii) Little Learners - structured parent and toddler session with themes each week e.g. Under the Sea, On the Farm etc

These sessions are often 10 weeks in duration, an hour and a half a week. The cost is £1000 per course to a school. Words and Pictures can be commissioned for 26 weeks to cover each letter of the alphabet.

e. One-off themed literacy workshops for children within their classes. Past themes have been:

i) Write off Racism (KS2)
ii) Community Cohesion (KS2)
iii) Bear Hunting (KS1)
iv) Keep Safe (KS1)

Workshops include shared reading and guided writing activities and sometimes a craft/music activity. Workshops can be specifically devised on any theme / issue and can be delivered once to one class or up to 6 times to six groups over the school day. Contact us for details
